White-purple figures in the 2020-21 league season 2

The 2020-21 season was a special one from several points of view. For Politehnica Timişoara it was a League 2 season with many challenges. After the uncertainties of last summer and the problems caused by the pandemic, the white-violets ended up fighting in the promotion play-off. And even if the access to the elite echelon was not made, the progress was obvious by obtaining the best positioning from the start of the project.

Politehnica ranked 6th after an unusual edition of League 2. Our team finished the regular season, which contained 19 games (in 21 stages), also on 6th place, with 32 points. At the end of the play-off, the white-violets totaled 41 points after another ten games, thus finishing three points away from the 4th place, the last one that ensured the presence at the promotion dam in League I.

Politehnica also had an honorable run in the Romanian Cup, being eliminated in the round of 16 by AFC Astra (score 1-2), after passing in the previous rounds of CSC Ghiroda and U Craiova 1948.

In terms of player statistics, it should be noted that not a single member of the team was missing in any game in the league. This is the striker Mircea Axente, also one of the few players in the group who was not affected by the new coronvavirus last fall. However, the leader in the minutes spent on the grass in League 2 is the vice-captain Cristian Scutaru, with 2,426 minutes counted.

The main scorers of the white-violets in the championship were Petre Ivanovici and Stjepan Plazonja – four goals each. “Pedro” was the top scorer of the Polytechnic if we take into account the Cup matches, where he scored three more times. Also, the passes of the Freidorf midfielder led to the scoring of four more goals for our team in League 2. The leader in the “assists” in the championship is Alex Munteanu, with five worked phases that turned into goals for colleagues.

The attack was not the strong point of our team in the 2020-21 season either, the white-violets scoring only 27 goals. Instead, 29 goals were scored, ie one goal per game, but four of them came to Mioveni (score 0-4 in the playoffs), the toughest failure of the season. The clearest victories were with the score of 2-0 (with Ripensia and Buzău), respectively that 3-1, away, with U Craiova 1948 in the Romanian Cup.
