Politehnica Timisoara’s second win of the season was also obtained away from home, today in the fourth round of League 2. It was 2-0 (0-0) for the white-violet team in Techirghiol, against Unirea Constanta, after two goals scored at the end by Roberto Hațegan and Cosmin Bîrnoi.
The match at the “Sparta” arena didn’t start very spectacularly. The hosts, with zero points, parted before the weekend with the midfielder Ionuț Cioinac, who played for Politehnica last season. On a rather difficult pitch, the first dangerous phase came after a free kick executed by Ignea in the 18th minute and headed by Mera from about eight meters wide of the goal. Although the white-violet dominated territorially, the hosts had perhaps the biggest chance of the first half after a counter-attack three minutes later, when Grigore escaped alone, but Păduraru blocked excellently. In the 41st minute Unirea had a dangerous set piece, but Liviu Mihai failed to find the target from 18 yards, the ball just wide of the keeper’s right corner. Three minutes later Axente hit a free-kick under the crossbar from long range, causing Grecu to save with difficulty in the corner.
The second half had several moments of good football. The 51st minute brought a good attacking action for the white-violet, finished with Benzar’s shot, a little to the left of the goalkeeper, who had to save. Two minutes later Unirea could have scored as well. Păduraru rejected the ball sent by Damașcan and at the resulting corner I. Ursu headed in, but the same goalkeeper was able to keep out the crossbar. Then, in the 63rd minute, Ionuț Ursu could have opened the scoring when he deflected Doru Andrei’s shot from the penalty area after a cross from Benzar.
The breakthrough came ten minutes before the end, when Lazăr’s shot was deflected to the newcomer Roberto Hațegan and the “American” scored with a low left-footed shot after a turn in the opponent’s box. The breakthrough then came in the 88th minute when Hațegan’s shot was saved by Grecu to his right and Cosmin Bîrnoi finished from close range for 2-0! With a good pace and in extra time, the white-violet had another chance of goal created by Costea and finished by Hațegan, after which the final whistle was blown.
With this success Politehnica is currently 6th in League 2, with seven points accumulated after four games played. The next game will be at home against Politehnica Iasi, scheduled for Thursday, August 26, at 20.00.
