Although it has an important tradition, football in Sibiu has never managed to make much of an impact at the top of Romanian football.

Over the years, in Romania’s first tier, there were, from Sibiu, NSE, HTV (both only in the final phase formula, the last one being finalist in 1931, 0-2 against UDR Reșița), Șoimii, Universitatea (after the Vienna Dictate, when it refused to operate under the Hungarian occupation, moving to Sibiu and operating under the name of Universitatea Cluj-Sibiu, playing the Romanian Cup final in 1942, 1-7 against Rapid), Inter (winner of the Balkan Cup in 1991) and Voința.

From 1951 until 1988, no team from Sibiu was in the first division!!!

After the disappearance of Inter (in 2000), Sibiu counted, one after the other, through Șoimii (a different club from the one previously named), FC, Athletic, Voința, the last three disbanding as quickly as they had appeared.

A new fan-fan of the city, FC Hermannstadt, was born in 2015, Hermannstadt being the German name for Sibiu. Enrolled directly in D4, it was promoted after just one year, and in 2018 it achieved its third consecutive promotion, to Liga I. That year it played, as a second-tier team, in the Romanian Cup final!

The 2018 performance was achieved with Alexandru Pelici, a former Polist stoper from Timisoara, as coach.

In 2021, FC Hermannstadt was relegated from Liga I and is now insolvent.

Sibiu is the city that gave the current president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis.
