Progresul Spartac București was founded in 2014, claiming (but not owning the record), like other groups, the tradition of Progres Bucharest.
The latter existed from 1944-2009, based in the Cotroceni district, was nicknamed the “bancarilor” team and had several names, including FC Nacional. It won the Romanian Cup in 1960. In the first division, the best position was 2nd place. It participated in European cups and gave players to the Romanian national team. It was one of the most important post-war clubs in the capital.
Progress Spartac 1944 (the full name of the current group) contains two former names and the year the “original” team was founded. In the summer of this year it was promoted for the first time to the Second League. The club’s president and coach is Andrei Erimia. Progresul Spartac plays its home matches in Buftea, on a synthetic pitch. In 2018 there was a friendly, Politehnica Timișoara – Progresul Spartac 0-0, to mark the 60th anniversary of the first trophy won by Știința Timișoara, the Romanian Cup in 1958, in a final against the “original” Progresul.
