The club was founded in 1955 (under the name Azotul) and re-established in 2004 (hence the current full name Unirea 04 Slobozia). The team was mostly in the 3rd League, only a few seasons in the second tier (debut only in 1983) and never in the elite. The best place in League II was 3rd place in 2014, in Series I.
In 2020 it was promoted back to D2 after a play-off with Mostistea Ulmu.
Although Slobozia is the county seat of Ialomita, another group from the county has established itself incomparably more. This is Unirea Urziceni (also Unirea…), representing a town of only 14,053 inhabitants! It was even the Romanian champion in 2009, the year in which it participated in the Champions League groups (wins over Glasgow Rangers, 4-1 away, and Sevilla, 1-0 at home!!) and qualified for the “spring” of the European League! Now the club no longer exists…
