Slatina is located on the left bank of the Olt River, in the historic province of Muntenia, on the border with Oltenia. In fact, Olt County (which has its seat in Slatina) includes territories from both historical provinces.

Slatina has never had a team in the first league, in the divisional system. In the 1924/25 and 1929/30 seasons of the national championship, Oltul Slatina made it to the finals.

Unlike most Romanian towns, Slatina did not have a historical champion team, but many clubs with a longer or shorter lifespan. Here are the most important ones, starting from 1970: Gloria, Dinamo, Energia, IPA, Sportul Muncitoresc, Metalurgistul, FC, IELIF, FC Grup Aluminiu, Oltul (a different club from the interwar one), Alro!

CSM Slatina was founded in 2009 and in 2011 it was promoted to the second league, after which it changed its name to FC Olt Slatina and its home ground to Piatra-Olt (a town in the county). The following year it disbanded, the name FC Olt being taken over by Alro Slatina (which was also in D2), under the official form ACS FC Olt Slatina. The latter team (founded in 2006, through the merger of Alprom and Olt) disbanded in 2015, when a new group appeared in the city, Inter Olt Slatina (also disbanded the following year).

CSM Slatina re-established itself in 2018. And, also after two years (as when it was founded in 2009), it reached the second echelon. In the summer of 2020, after being in 2nd place in the 3rd series of the 3rd League, when the championship was “frozen” due to the coronavirus pandemic, it won the play-off for 1st place in the series (and, implicitly, for promotion), against Progresul Spartac București. It was relegated from the second tier after only one season, then re-promoted last summer, also by play-off.

The team does not have the right to promotion to League I because of the club’s form of organisation.

The only team from Olt county that played in the first league, in a divisional system, was FC Olt Scornicești, between 1979-1990 (the best performance, 4th place, in 1982), for several years having its own ground in Slatina. Scornicești was then a commune (since 1989, a town) and was the birthplace of the communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu, who ruled Romania. In fact, the team’s rise was due to this very situation. FC Olt Scornicești was the first rural team in D1 in Romania!

In the last 30 years, Slatina has given Romanian football players such as Luțu or Dinamo’s famous attacking duo, Dănciulescu (the record holder for the most matches all time in League I, 515, and second in the all-time top scorers in League I, 214 goals) – Cl. Niculescu. Raț (113 caps for Romania!) and Bancu come from the county, while Craioveanu started his football career in the county.
