A project that has been talked about in recent years has taken shape. It is the construction of a state-of-the-art 1,600-seat grandstand at the Science Stadium, replacing the three rows of seats on the side facing the Faculty of Construction.

Work has actually started. The total value of the investment is around 10 million euro, the beneficiary is the University Politehnica Timișoara and the funding is provided by the state budget, through the Ministry of Education. The completion deadline is 36 months.

The new grandstand will include parking spaces, changing rooms, a conference room, a doctor’s surgery, a cafeteria, toilets, technical areas, etc., and there will be two mini-football pitches on the roof!

If nobody knows when the two new stadiums (the big one, on the site of the current “Dan Paltinisanu”, and the one in Calea Buziașului) will start work, here, at last, concrete things are happening!

The Știința Stadium was inaugurated on 22 April 1928, when the football pitch in the courtyard of the Faculty of Mechanics, then called Politehnica, was set up by the voluntary work of students. The pitch was re-inaugurated as a stadium on 7 November 1948, with a capacity of 3,000 seats. It bore the names Politehnica, CSU, Știința 23 August, and then 23 August (the name under which it would remain consecrated). After the Second World War, Politehnica’s football, 11-a-side handball and rugby teams performed there.

In 1963, the city’s big stadium, called 1 Mai (now Dan Paltinisanu), was inaugurated and the football team moved there. The 23 August stadium reverts to being a field, where only student sports activities are held.

Later it changes its name to Știința, becomes a stadium again and football matches are held again since 1995, with the foundation of AS Politehnica.

After the last renovations, in 2008 and 2012, the Știința stadium had 2,600 seats (1,000 seats) and was approved for League II football. The dimensions of the pitch are 105 x 68 m and the turf is natural. The stadium has a night-time (only approved for the lower divisions), an athletics track and an electronic scoreboard.

Since last summer, Politehnica Timișoara has moved its own pitch to the Electrica stadium, while the Știința stadium remains for the club’s junior teams and women’s football team.
