The Politehnica Timisoara football team will play the last friendly match of the winter on Saturday. It will be an away international match, starting at 14:00 (Romanian time, 13:00 local time).
The opponent is a team from Serbian Banat, in the neighboring country’s 3rd division. It’s OFK Kikinda (photo), who are in 4th place in the Vojvodina series of the Srpska league, with 25 points from 15 rounds. Leading the table is Haiduk Divoš, four points clear.
OFK Kikinda was founded in 1909 and is one of the oldest clubs in Serbia. They play their home matches at the Gradski Stadion, which has a capacity of 7,500. Last season they finished 5th in the same division.
Their best period was in the 1990s, after the break-up of Yugoslavia, when they played several seasons in the country’s top division. Blagoje Paunović and Mladen Krstajić are two of the most important players in the club’s history, the former having been with OFK in the 1970s after 39 caps for the Yugoslavian national team and playing for Partizan Belgrade and Utrecht. The second was with the club in the 1990s, before going on to play for the Serbian national team and for Partizan Belgrad, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04.
In 1996, Iosif Rotariu also wore the OFK shirt, on loan from Poli!
The town of Kikinda has 32,000 inhabitants and is the administrative center of the North Banat district of the autonomous province of Vojvodina.
