In the summer of this year, an event of major importance occurred in Constanta football.
Viitorul Constanta, a club founded in 2009 by Gheorghe Hagi and which won a national title (2017), a Romanian Cup (2019) and a Romanian Supercup (2019), ceded its place in League I to Farul Constanta, from D2, and thus disbanded.
Farul, Dobrogea’s historic champion team, was founded in 1949 (although the year 1920 appears on the logo), in the first division it reached a maximum of 4th place, was a finalist in the Balkan Cup (1966) and the Romanian Cup (2005), but never participated in the European cups (only in the UEFA-Intertoto Cup, reaching the last round in 2006).
Farul gave the legendary Gheorghe Hagi (born in Săcele, a commune in the county), the greatest player in the history of Romanian football and one of the greatest world players of the 80s and 90s.
Unirea Constanța will take the vacant place in League II in the summer of 2021. The club was founded just then, it is based in Constanța, but is linked to two other towns in the county: it declares that it represents Mangalia and plays on its home ground in Techirghiol!!!
The coach of the team was, until before the match with Poli, the ex-international Ianis Zicu. The player who, under the colours of FC Timisoara, was the League I goal scorer in 2011, with 18 goals. He had been Farului’s coach until this summer.
